Yesterday I called the diabetes nurse to see what was going on with the possibility of me going on to Byetta. Apparently she left a message a few days ago which I didn't get but I had a doctor's appointment in about 2.5 hours to see if I fit the criteria to go onto a Byetta trial.
I went and yes I now take 2 injections a day of lizard spit.
What's Byetta I hear you mutter.
BYETTA (bye-A-tuh) is the first in a class of medicines for type 2 diabetes called incretin mimetics. BYETTA is an injectable medicine used to improve glucose (blood sugar) control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It can be used with metformin, a sulfonylurea, or a thiazolidinedione.
Since I take the highest dosage of Metformin I do fit the profile.
One good side effect is Byetta is that it may reduce appetite and the amount of food that is eaten so I can hopefully lose weight too.
So I took the first painful jab last night right before I had supper. Why was it painful? Because I held the stomach too tight (wasn't going to write held the fat). That caused pain. This morning, it was painless. Yay me!
As soon as I could I pre-ordered David Mendosa's 'Losing Weight with Your Diabetes Medication' from http://www.amazon.com. I highly recommend this book for those on Byetta or on any diabetes medication. It's really helped me in these few hours since I've been on Byetta.
So far I haven't had any real nausea, which is apparently, the main and major side effect.
This month I will be on 5 micrograms and then I will be switched to 10. Should prove interesting.
I'll let you know how I make out.
